MAKING A FILM POSTER

As Meabh and I were responsible for creating the film poster, I had a look at a few different film posters for some inspiration. I know I want the main focus to be Dawn's face, with the tea-cup as a main feature. After taking a few practice shots, we all decided we preferred the side profile of Dawn, so I looked at covers featuring a female protagonist's side profile.

This poster advertising the Netflix Original film, To the Bone, is very simple and very similar to what I picture ours looking like. The color scheme is very minimal, with very cool toned shades, blue and grey being very central to the color palette. These cool toned shades are reflective of the film, as it is all about the harsh realities of eating disorders and Lily Collin's struggle with anorexia.

The poster is very hazy, and the only part of the poster than seems to be in focus is Lily's face, this could be alluding to the fact the main focus of the film is on appearances.

The font is very simple and in block capitals, again not giving much away. The crisp white stands out against the colours in the background and Lily's dark hair.

All in all, this poster doesn't tell the viewer much about the storyline, yet this simple approach is very effective and Lily's intense stare is very captivating for the viewer.

This second poster I looked at also features a close up photo of a female. This differs from the previous poster as the protagonist is facing the camera in this one. The colors in this poster are much more distinctive than the previous, with a black and white theme. Half of the female's face is shadowed, suggesting a sense of mystery and perhaps showing some things are yet to be discovered or 'lurking in the shadows.'

This poster features a tag line, which is something that I want to include in our poster. The woman of science insinuates that the leading protagonist is female which is intriguing to viewers. The title of this film is harsh against the white background being red which is the only color in this poster. Red is often a hint to danger or blood which could be a look into the theme of this film.

The last poster I looked at was for the film, The Girl On The Train. This film was previously a  book, so it already had a large audience anticipating its release. This film features cool tones, often meaning this film is either horror, crime or thriller. The image on this poster is very simple and reflective of the title, as it is literally a girl on a train. We can see a house relfecting in the window, insinuating that this house holds alot of significance in the film. The woman's face is showing distraught and confusion, she looks exhausted and distant.

The font on this poster has an effect over it, almost blurred as if you were reading the title on a fast moving train, perhaps suggesting this film has a fast moving plot. There is also a tag line on this film, 'what did she see?', this rhetorical question is very intriguing for the viewer, we want to watch on and find out the answer.
